This morning, I visited the orthodontist and picked up my new retained. This is the kind of retainer that I remember from when I was a kid. It is plastic molded to the roof of my mouth, and has wires that fit around some of the teeth. There is one big wire that goes around the front of the teeth. I have an appointment in 6 weeks where he will remove the wire. The retainer also has a prosthetic tooth attached to fill in the gap from my cut bridge. When I get my bridge replaced, I am supposed to come back so he can remove the prosthetic tooth from the retainer.
I am supposed to wear this retainer during the day, and then wear the other plastic invisalign-type retainers at night.
I still need to take this retainer off when I eat or when brushing my teeth. It is easier to pop out and back in again though, than the other ones.
I am still getting used to the feel of having it in my mouth. I talk with sort of a lisp while wearing it. I am told this will go away with practice. The orthodontist assistant actually suggested that I talk to myself in the mirror… I don’t think that will be necessary.
